essential oil

For most Christians, the story of the Magi is something taught in grade school. As the birth of Jesus was approaching, a great star appeared in the sky. Three wise kings, who had a fascination with astrology, knew this star signified something incredibly special. As the story goes, the men set out to follow the star, bringing with them each a valuable gift from east of Israel: Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh.

All three gifts were considered ordinary offerings for a new king. Gold has some value to it, but frankincense was used as a perfume and myrrh was a commonly used anointing oil. So why did the Magi bring these particular gifts? Is there a deeper meaning behind the surface? How can we apply them to modern medical holistic practices? Are these gifts secretly a solution to many of today’s ailments? Keep reading to find out.

Gold Essential Oil

In the biblical tale, gold was given to the new king as a symbol of  “kingship of the earth.” However, in this interpretation, gold represents the essential oil turmeric. Turmeric is part of the ginger family and is well known for its warm golden color. It is a root, which has been cultivated into spices, teas, and oils.  In a generalized sense, turmeric ingestion can: help fight cancer, prevent neurologic diseases, improve liver health, and can even relieve depression and anxiety. One of the greatest uses of turmeric though is as an anti-inflammatory essential oil. Curcumin, the most active ingredient in turmeric, helps to target inflamed cells and releases antioxidants. Recent studies have shown that regular turmeric use could be a very powerful ally in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, radiation dermatitis, and ulcerative colitis.

Frankincense Essential Oil

Back to Bethlehem, frankincense was brought due to its deity symbolism. During this time, frankincense was mainly used as incense/perfume. Today while we do still use frankincense as incense/perfume, we also use it through essential oil. Some benefits include: reduce stress and negative emotion, boost immune system function, help fight cancer and chemotherapy side effects, prevent signs of aging, balance hormones, and as an astringent. On top of these benefits, frankincense, like turmeric, also aids in reducing inflammation. When used as an oil, it can inhibit the production of key inflammatory molecules. It can help prevent the breakdown of cartilage tissue in conditions such as arthritis. Because of its effectiveness, frankincense is one of the most natural treatment recommendations for pain-related conditions of muscles, joints, and tendons.

Myrrh Essential Oil

The last gift to the newborn king was that of myrrh, which was used as embalming oil and symbolized the mortality of man. As you probably can guess, today, we use myrrh for an array of health issues including inhibiting unhealthy microbial growth, astringent properties, cough relief, help to fight fungal infections, improve digestion, speed up healing, boost immunity, and stimulate blood circulation. Like the other two gifts of the magi, myrrh is also used for its anti-inflammatory properties. Myrrh essential oil sedated inflammation in various tissues – especially in the case of fever or viral infection. It also treats indigestion inflammation resulting from spicy food and helps to protect the circulatory system from toxins.
